The Bamboo Dome is a great eco-friendly structure, especially because it is cost effective and highly flexible in use – perfect for emergency shelter. The structure takes up 40sqm, but only costs in the regions of £600 to build. Its spherical shape also means that it provides good resistance from natural hazards, thereby allowing it to withstand strong winds and earthquakes relatively well. Perhaps the most important factor is the ease with which it is built, requiring no more than 3 people who need not have extensive experience. In order to construct the Dome it is necessary to pre-cut the bamboo two days prior to assembly. This is to ensure that the bamboo is supple enough to allow for construction without breaking.
