A fascinating and mind opening talk by Henry Markram, one of the world’s leading neuroscientists who says the mysteries of the mind can be solved – soon. In this talk Henry raises issues of ethics, philosophy and the theory of autism in his incredible revelations about the brain and the evolution of the neocortex, the brain’s network of G5 processors. Mental illness, memory and perception are the product of a bundle of neurons and electric signals. Henry plans to map and find the paths to these – the holy grail of neuroscience – with a supercomputer that models the brain’s 100,000,000,000,000 synapses. This is well worth the listening time – even if you put it on in the background while you work.
Challenging all existing brain theories Markram goes on to examine diversity, self awareness, and brain circuitry, leaving us to paint an exciting picture about the future of neuroscience. Imagine the possibilities once, like DNA – we have mapped the complex synapses of our body’s most complex organ. The potential for silicon reproduction, implantation, communication and potentially upload / download seem ever closer – Markram suggests his team need just 10 years. With IBM behind Markram’s research we may soon be able to paint a whole new picture of our subjective reality.
