There are advantages and disadvantages to choosing to work from home. Here we explore their nature and their effects whilst offering tips on how to maximise productivity within the domestic sphere during working hours.
One of the main advantages is the reduced cost of commuting and the flexibility of working hours. Most people heading to work on a Monday morning have to leave at least an hour before the start of their working day. The beauty of working from home is that you can more or less roll out of bed and head to your desk. Not only does this save you time it also saves rather a lot of money in transport expenses. However, it does make it a little harder to be disciplined regarding your hours. It doesn’t necessarily make a difference whether you decide to start the working day at 9am or at 11am, but working to some kind of daily routine will help to improve your productivity.
Another perk of having your office at home is that you are able to work in the environment within which you are most comfortable. Feeling happy and comfortable is one of the most important factors affecting your ability to work effectively. The downside is that if you are too happy and comfortable it could get all too easy to take long breaks in front of the TV between tasks or to lose time creating fancy lunch menus in the kitchen. A good way to beat this kind of temptation is to invest in some office furniture and create a space within your home that has a highly professional feel. Rymans is a good place to look for practical and professional desk and storage solutions. You may want to experiment a little in the first few weeks of working from home in order to find the furniture arrangement that creates the right kind of working vibe for you.
Just as it may be difficult to begin the working day in your home it can also be hard to end it. If you have set yourself a time at which you begin your days’ toil it is also important to decide when you stop so that at 6pm, for example, you can move away from your office space without it encroaching upon your family life and personal time.
