IDEO (pronounced “eye-dee-oh”) describes itself as an award-winning global design firm that takes a human-centred approach to helping organizations in the public and private sectors innovate and grow. It is therefore unsurprising that when they set about redesigning the ATM machine for Spanish bank BBVA, their whole ethos focused on one key aim – the humanising of the ATM machine. They did this by incorporating a large touch screen and a much simpler user interface than currently exists. What’s more , their ATM also attempts to personalise the screen depending on the user, for example suggesting short-cuts based on the customer’s previous transactions. Thus, the idea is that the customer will be able to do far more as compared to a traditional ATM, but in a more efficient and less complicated way. One of the cleverest new features is the position of the machine itself, which is placed in such a way that it forces other customers to get in line next to the ATM rather than behind. This therefore makes transactions far more pleasant since there is no risk of someone looking over your shoulder, and the menacing feeling which accompanies that.
